A boy from Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 near the town of Vinci in Italy. At around 15 he was apprenticed to the artist Verrocchio in Florence.
A master painter
He painted The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa, now in the Louvre, and drew the Vitruvian Man around 1490.
More than 10,000 pages of notes
He filled more than 10,000 pages of notebooks. Left-handed, he often wrote in mirror script, readable with a mirror. He dissected about 30 human bodies and wrote more than 35,000 words with around 500 drawings on flight.
A parachute that really works
A parachute built to his design was tested in 2000 — and it worked!
Final years
In 1516 he moved to France, where he died on 2 May 1519.
