How fast is light?
Light travels about 300,000 kilometres per second — around 7.5 times around the Earth every second. Light from the Moon reaches us in about 1.3 seconds, and sunlight takes about 8 minutes 20 seconds.
1 light-year = 9.46 trillion km
The distance light travels in one year is about 9.46 trillion kilometres. Driving non-stop at 100 km/h, you would need about 10.8 million years to cover it!
Voyager 1
Voyager 1, the most distant human-made object, will reach one light-day from Earth around November 2026 — after nearly 50 years of travel.
How far are other stars?
- Proxima Centauri (nearest star): ~4.24 light-years
- Andromeda Galaxy: ~2.5 million light-years
