Did you know? Your body, your desk, your phone — almost all of it is empty space!

Atoms really are empty
An atom has a tiny nucleus at its centre with electrons around it. If an atom were blown up to the size of a stadium, the nucleus would be about the size of a pea in the middle — nearly everything else is empty space.
All of humanity in a sugar cube
If you squeezed the empty space out of the atoms of every person on Earth, all that matter would shrink to about the size of a single sugar cube — though it would still weigh hundreds of millions of tonnes.
Neutron stars: nature does it for real
Space has objects that crush matter like this: neutron stars. One can hold more mass than the Sun yet be only about 20 km across. A teaspoon of its material would weigh around a billion tonnes!
Summary
- Atoms are almost entirely empty space
- The nucleus is tiny but holds nearly all the mass
- Squeezed, all humanity fits in a sugar cube
- Neutron star ~20 km · a teaspoon ~1 billion tonnes
