The Milky Way, our home galaxy
Earth is racing around the galaxy at over 700,000 km/h!
The Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years across and holds more than 100 billion stars. Our Solar System sits on a small spiral arm about 26,000 light-years from the centre, and the Sun takes about 230 million years to orbit the galaxy once.
At the centre is the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), about 4 million times the mass of the Sun — yet M87* is roughly 1,600 times heavier. In May 2022 the Event Horizon Telescope revealed its first image; seen from Earth, it is as small as a blueberry sitting on the Moon.
